Imagine this.

President Obama and Michelle are in attendance at the funeral service of Nelson Mandela. No surprise. So are numbers of other American diplomats and politicians, active and former.

President Obama’s administration sent no active representative of the U.S. government to the funeral of Margaret Thatcher in April of 2013, other than a local delegation from the London embassy. No Vice-President. No Secretary of State. No Cabinet official. Former politicians and diplomats, including past presidents, attended as private citizens, but no one represented our current White House.

Margaret Thatcher was a monumental international figure during her record tenure as the Prime Minister of Great Britain. Her domestic accomplishments and influence on world peace are indisputable. She was fiercely loyal to our nation as an ally. Our president not only failed to attend, the White House was not represented either.

Add that to the trail of insults President Obama has imparted upon our county’s greatest ally from the onset of the Obama presidency. No other nation on earth has sacrificed as many lives in support of our war efforts, anywhere. Whether the wars were right or wrong, the United Kingdom has been there for us every time, long before Thatcher and long since. But she was a huge ally during the cold war, upon which she left her mark.

Obama’s staff was too busy for Margaret Thatcher? Well, note this:

  • Susan Rice wasn’t too busy to attend the funeral of Ethiopia’s president
  • Hillary Clinton was sent to attend the funeral of Vaclav Havel, Czech Republic.
  • Hillary also attended the funeral of the president of Ghana.
  • Vice President Joe Biden led a delegation to the funeral of a Saudi royal
  • Obama personally attended the funeral of Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski

It was Margaret Thatcher who joined forces with the U.S. in the 1980′s to liberate much of Eastern Europe from tyranny. Thatcher stood behind Reagan when he told Gorbachev to tear down the wall. She bucked the European trend and allowed the United States to use British airspace after Lockerbie. She allowed the United States to host its arsenal of cruise missiles in the U.K., over loud protests. If Barack Obama doesn’t appreciate those things, so be it. But it certainly matters to the millions of us who do appreciate them. It certainly matters  to the Britsh people.

And so it goes. Margaret Thatcher’s funeral priorities was somewhere below the death of Porky Pig to this president. It’s no surprise. He has been treating the Brits like trailer trash since being elected. There are many examples…which I’ll spare you in this essay.

I certainly do not begrudge the large turnout to Mandela’s funeral. But Thatcher deserved the same and didn’t get it. The contrast is glaring.

This president is an embarrassment.
