Islam teaches things about Jesus Christ that may shock many Christians. Today we are going to focus on the Islamic teachings about Jesus Christ. We will compare what Islam says with what the Bible says.

First John talks about those who deny Jesus is the Christ.

Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. 1 John 2:22 AV

This is exactly what Islam does, it denies that Jesus is the Christ. Jesus, Himself, warned us that in the end times many false christs would come. When the Bible warns us that we are to be on the lookout for these false christs we should take it seriously.

We are hearing more and more that the Bible and the Qur’an have a lot to things in common concerning Jesus. While it is true that the Qur’an does talk about Jesus (Isa), the Jesus of the Bible and the Jesus of the Qur’an have little or nothing in common.

One of the tactics of those Muslims who are tying to convert Christians to Islam use is to say that we have common ground because we both believe in Jesus. Many uneducated Christians fall for this. We need to know what the Qur’an really teaches about Jesus so we can counter the efforts of Muslims to delude weak Christians.

The difference between the Jesus of the Bible and the Jesus of the Qur’an is what brought Shahram to Christ. It is a tool we must have in our evangelism arsenal.

We are going to expose these differences and expose the fallacy that Islam and Christianity both talk about the same Jesus. You will see that nothing could be further from the truth.

Muslims are being brought to Christ when they are exposed to the Scriptures and when they are allowed to ask their questions. It is wrong to assume that Muslims understand our faith. The truth is they have no idea what true Christians believe. Sadly they don’t even know what their religion teaches.

If you are wrong about Jesus, if the Jesus you believe in is not the biblical Jesus, you will end up in the wrong place for all eternity. You can be sincere and very religious, but if you don’t have the right Jesus you will spend eternity in the Lake of Fire.

The Birth of Jesus

Matthew and Luke both teach that Jesus was born of a virgin. The Old Testament foretold this in the Book of Isaiah.

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14 AV

It may surprise you to know that Islam teaches the Jesus was born of a virgin.

Surah 3:47 She said: “O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man hath touched me?” He said: “Even so: Allah createth what He willeth: When He hath decreed a plan, He but saith to it, ‘Be,’ and it is!

Although Muslims will accept the virgin birth of Christ, there are some things you will be surprised about. The Qur’an says that Jesus was born under a palm tree.

Surah 19:23 And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree: She cried (in her anguish): “Ah! would that I had died before this! would that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight!”

The Muslim Jesus was not born in the manger in Bethlehem.

The Qur’an says Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the sister of Aaron. The reason this is so easy for them is that they use Marium for Mary, which is a valid translation of Mary. They get her confused with Miriam the sister of Moses and Aaron.

Surah 19:27-28 At length she brought (the babe) to her people, carrying him (in her arms), They said: “O Mary! Truly a strange thing has thou brought! “O sister of Aaron, thy father was not a man of evil, nor your mother a woman unchaste!”

It is interesting that Islam believes in Jesus and in His virgin birth, but that they get so many crucial points wrong. Where Jesus was born in one of the proofs that He is who He claimed to be, the Son of God. Where He was born and the fact that His crib was a manger are not minor details. If He was born anywhere but Bethlehem then He is not the promised Messiah.

It is absolutely incredible that they make Mary the sister of Aaron. This is an error of 1,000 years.

The Qur’an never tells us how or why Mary conceived, it only says that Allah willed it so it happened. The Bible also teaches why the virgin birth was necessary. The sin nature is passed on through the man. If Jesus had a human father He would not have been without sin.

Who Is The Islamic Jesus?

As we look into what the Bible and the Qur’an say about Jesus it becomes obvious that both cannot be the true Jesus. One is true and the other is a counterfeit. They are not both talking about the same person.

Jesus is mentioned more than 90 times in the Qur’an and every time He is mentioned, He is called a messenger of Allah. The word “messenger” is the same word used about the Prophet Muhammad. The Qur’an teaches that Isa is simply a prophet. He is not the Son of God, nor is He God. As a mater of fact, Islam considers saying that Jesus is divine to be blasphemy.

Islam teaches that there have been 7 major prophets and that Jesus is number 6 in the line of 7. Muhammad was the 7th and final messenger. The major task of Muhammad was to refute the “people of the Book,” Jews and Christians, most particularly on their teachings about Jesus.

The Jesus of the Qur’an is a Muslim. The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus is a Jew. The Gospels trace His linage back through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The Qur’an has Jesus (Isa) stating that He is just a prophet.

Surah 5:72-75 The Messiah has said. ‘Indeed he who associates others with Allah, Allah has forbidden him Paradise and his refuge is the fire.

Notice that they used the word “Messiah.” You may think that means they believe the same as we do. It doesn’t. To them Messiah means something completely different. The Qur’an never defines the term.

To the Christian the Messiah is the one promised by God, the Holy one of Israel, the promised saviour. The Bible has more than 300 Messianic prophecies. These prophecies have been fulfilled in Christ.

From this passage we learn that Isa says not to associate him with Allah, don’t make him equal. He is saying that he is not divine and not part of the Trinity. He says that if we do, Allah will send us to Hell.

The passage goes on to say that Isa, the son of Mary was only a messenger. The Qur’an goes to great length to take away the deity of Christ.

Here are some passaages from the Qur’an that teach that Allah had no son:

Surah 39:4 Had Allah wished to take to Himself a son, He could have chosen whom He pleased out of those whom He doth create: but Glory be to Him! (He is above such things.) He is Allah, the One, the Irresistible.

Surah 37:151-152 Is it not that they say, from their own invention, “Allah has begotten children”? but they are liars!

The Jesus of the Qur’an is not the Son of God and the Qur’an emphasizes this teaching. The Bible makes it very clear that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God. It should be obvious to all of you that the Jesus of the Qur’an and the Jesus of the Bible are not the same Jesus.

Surah 19 says

And they said, the most merciful Allah has taken for himself a son. Assuredly you utter a hideous thing whereby almost the heavens are torn and the earth is split asunder, and the mountains fall in ruins.

Muslims not only deny that Allah has a son, they do so in the strongest terms. They actually pray a passage from Surah 112

Surah 112:4 He begets not, nor was he begotten.

This means that since Allah does not beget he has no sons, and since he is not begotten he is not a son. Muslims pray this up to 15 times a day.

As we saw in the verse we started with today, those who deny that Jesus is the Christ are antichrist. If you get Jesus wrong, you will be eternally wrong.

The Jesus of the Bible

Jesus was accused of blasphemy 5 times.

1. Mark 2:5-10 ‘Only God can forgive sins…’

2. John 5:18 Jesus claimed to be the son of God

3. John 8:56-59 Jesus claimed to be the ‘I am’

4. John 10:30-33 ‘I and my Father are one….’

5. Matt 26:63-66 Jesus affirms that he is the Christ

It is clear from these passages that Jesus taught that He was God. People say Jesus never said that He was God and while it is true that He never said “I am God,” He did communicated that message. Those who heard Him fully understood what He meant. As a result they accused Him of blasphemy and wanted to stone Him to death.

Here is one of my favorite passages on the deity of Christ:

Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. John 20:27-29 AV

In this passage Thomas calls Jesus “My Lord and my God.” Jesus does not rebuke him for calling Him God. As a matter of fact He said that Thomas believed because he had seen Him. In essence Jesus said Thomas believed the truth because of what he had seen. The truth is that Jesus is both Lord and God.

Here is one more verse that makes it clear that Jesus is the Son of God:

But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Hebrews 1:8 AV

Here we have God calling the Son “God.” Who wants to argue with God?

Segment Three

As we have seen so far, Jesus calmed to be the Son of God and that He was God. Not only did He make these claims, He backed them up by the miracles that He performed. His greatest miracle was His resurrection. Only God could have done this. The Bible clearly teaches that God raised Jesus from the dead. It also teaches that the Holy Spirit raised Him from the dead. It also says that Jesus raised Himself from the dead. How could this be? The answer is that all are God and what one does, the others do because the three are one.

Muslims have picked up on the fact that many Christians in the west are weak and don’t know Bible doctrine. They are using the fact that the Qur’an talks about Jesus to dupe these weak Christians into believing that they also believe in Jesus. Here are two examples of billboards that are popping up all over the country.

Find Jesus in the Quran

Jesus is Muslim

(Don’t associate MacDonald’s with this billboard. It is just a coincident that the MacDonald’s sign is also in the picture.)

These are showing up in places like Norcross, GA in an attempt to proselyte Christians to Islam. A Christian that doesn’t know what Islam teaches about Jesus will think that this means Islam and Christianity believe the same thing.

The Islamic Center for North America (ICNA) put these up. They are a Muslim Brotherhood front group. They are trying to cause Christians to think they are wrong about Islam and to try to pull them ways from Christianity and to Islam.

Muslims are also using this kind of tactics on college campuses to reach our young adults. They are having particular success among young women.

Muslims have a hard time understanding what we teach concerning the deity of Christ. They think we believe that man became God. They don’t understand that we teach that God became man without losing His godhood. They don’t understand that the Word (God the Son) became flesh.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14 AV

It is important that we know what and why we believe. We must have a ready answer to those who would draw us away from the truth.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: 1 Peter 3:15 AV

Islam and the Crucifixion

Islam teaches that Jesus did not die on the cross. They consider this a lie and they have an interesting explanation for what they believe.

Surah 4:157-158 “And their saying: Surely we have killed the Messiah, Isa son of Marium, the apostle of Allah; and they did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them so (like Isa) and most surely those who differ therein are only in a doubt about it; they have no knowledge respecting it, but only follow a conjecture, and they killed him not for sure. Nay! Allah took him up to Himself; and Allah is Mighty, Wise.”

They are saying that Allah deceived the Christians and the Jews into believing that Jesus was crucified. In order for us to understand Islam we must go beyond the Qur’an. There are other works that are just as binding on Muslims as is the Qur’an. The Hadith are the recorded works and sayings of Muhammad. Muslims are commanded to follow their Prophet and, therefore, these works teach Muslims how they are to conduct themselves.

The following narration recorded in the Qur’anic exegesis of Ibn Kathir is graded as authentic by orthodox Sunni scholars for the Qur’anic verse related to the substitution of Jesus:

Ibn Abbas said, “Just before Allah raised Jesus to the Heavens, Jesus went to his disciples, who were twelve inside the house. When he arrived, his hair was dripping with water (as if he had just had a bath) and he said, ‘There are those among you who will disbelieve in me twelve times after you had believed in me.’ He then asked, ‘Who among you will volunteer for his appearance to be transformed into mine, and be killed in my place. Whoever volunteers for that, he will be with me (in Paradise).’ One of the youngest ones among them volunteered, but Jesus asked him to sit down. Jesus asked again for a volunteer, and the same young man volunteered and Jesus asked him to sit down again. Then the young man volunteered a third time and Jesus said, ‘You will be that man,’ and the resemblance of Jesus was cast over that man while Jesus ascended to Heaven from a hole in the roof of the house. When the Jews came looking for Jesus, they found that young man and crucified him.

Since after the crucifixion Judas is not seen any more Muslims assume that the volunteer was Judas. He says that the image of Jesus was put on Judas so everyone would think that Jesus was crucified. The reward for taking Jesus’ place was to be in Paradise.

Christians must remember that if Jesus, the Son of God, did not die on the cross there is no hope of salvation. If He did not take upon Himself the sins of the world we are still lost in our sin. There is no way we could pay the debt of sin ourselves. It required the sinless Son of God.

This is not a light issue. It is not just saying things a different way. It is denying the very essence of Christianity. It is denying the only hope of mankind. It denies the very reason Christ came to this earth.

If Jesus did not die on the cross there is no resurrection. Jesus claimed to be the resurrection and the life.

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: John 11:25 AV

You will notice that He links His resurrection to ours. If He did not rise from the dead there will be no resurrection for us. Paul made this point very clear.

And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 1 Corinthians 15:17-19 AV

If Christ is not risen from the grave we are without hope. The lives that we live here are most miserable because we sacrifice to live lives acceptable to God, and all for naught if Jesus did not raise from the grave. The resurrection of Christ is vital to the Christian faith.

Segment Four

Something that must be obvious to you is that, according to the teachings of Islam, Allah performed a hoax upon the world and Isa, his prophet, participated in that hoax. This means that, according to Islam, Christians have not only believed a lie for 2,000 years, they have been dying for that lie.

What kind of god would perpetuate the largest hoax in human history? How much confidence should we place in a god who would not only put forth such a hoax, but who would have his prophet take part in it? How could Isa be a good prophet and participate in something like this? This give us great insight into Islam. Truth is not an issue, submission is.

One of Allah’s 99 names means “Allah is the chief of the deceivers.” He sure lived up to this name if what Islam teaches is true.

The Qur’an has many contradictions, but this is one of the biggest. It is contradicted by the Qur’an in Surah 3:

Surah 3:144 And Muhammad is but a Messenger. Verily all Messengers have passed away before him …

This verse does not say that Jesus died, but it sure suggests that he did. Jesus is a messenger and all messengers have passed away. Muhammad passed away by dying. If Isa passed away before Allah, he must also have died.

Islam’s Eschatology

Did you know that Muslims are also expecting Jesus to return to earth? They believe that Jesus went to Heaven as a prophet and that He will return as simply a prophet. He will be second in command to the Islamic Messiah.

Muslims believe the our Jesus is the Antichrist. We need to understand that Islamic eschatology (doctrines of last things) is the exact opposite of what the Bible teaches. If you place them side by side, the Muslim teachings are a mirror image of what the Bible teaches.

Islam teaches that when Isa returns he will destroy Christianity. He will also establish Shariah Law on the whole earth. He will also lead an army to kill the Jews.

In summary the Jesus of the Qur’an is not a Jew, he is a Muslim. He will destroy every vestige of Christianity including the cross. He is going to kill all of the Jews. He is going to establish Islamic Shariah Law upon the earth.

This is the Jesus of the Qur’an. There is quite a difference, isn’t there? Paul warned us to watch for another gospel and to reject it.

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:8-9 AV

Paul thought this was important enough to say it twice in succession. Those who bring another gospel are to be accursed. We must take a stand against all false gospels and Islam is the greatest promoter of a false gospel.

The angel that Islam claims gave the revelation to Muhammad is not Gabriel. He is another angel, a messenger of Satan. Let me close with this passage of Scripture:

And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore [it is] no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 AV

As Paul spoke out against the false teachers of his day, those that were led by demons and looked like ministers of righteousness, we must speak out against those of our day.

The message of Islam is not good news. It is a message of death and suffering. The message of the Bible is good news. It is a message of life and blessing.
