Michael W. Cutler | CAPS The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “collateral damage” as “deaths, injuries, and damage to the property of people who are not in the military that happen as a result of the fighting in a war.” Our nation’s military services have deployed extremely expensive and increasingly sophisticated “smart weapons” to all but eliminate collateral damage among the civilian population. These weapons are being deployed in our efforts to combat ISIS and other terror organizations in the Middle East, while doing everything possible to not injure or kill noncombatants. However, where immigration is concerned, a different sort of collateral damage is being inflicted on Americans citizens, right here, inside the very borders of our nation. The carnage is directly attributable to policies of local and state politicians who have declared their jurisdictions to be “sanctuaries” for illegal aliens. By openly ignoring our immigration laws, these cities and states are attracting illegal aliens, and the criminal aliens among them, thereby undermining our immigration laws that were enacted to protect America and Americans. The immigration policies and executive orders of the Obama administration have virtually turned America into a “Sanctuary Country.” Consequently, American citizens and others are losing their lives to aliens who have violated our nation’s borders and immigration laws. In point of fact, when these aliens were previously deported, their mere presence in our country constitutes a felony. This lunacy has been ongoing for decades, and the number of such sanctuaries and the accompanying casualty count continue to grow in lock-step – in fact I testified before the House Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Claims on the issue back in 2003. In an avoidable and senseless tragedy, on July 2, 2015, Kate Steinle was shot and killed. Francisco Sanchez, an illegal alien from Mexico who previously was convicted of seven felonies and had been deported on five occasions, was arrested and charged with the murder. Just days earlier, Donald Trump, an announced candidate for the presidency, made strong statements about illegal immigration. Mr. Trump’s statements were blunt and lacked nuance; yet, he suddenly made it impossible for the politicians from both parties to ignore the obvious – our borders and our immigration laws are not protecting America and Americans. The murder, occurring on the heels of Trump’s statement, forced the media to realize that they too could not ignore sanctuary cities and illegal immigration. Newsmax reported “Trump’s Comments ‘a Long Time Coming’” in an interview I did July 7, and FrontPage Magazine posted my article, “Many More Victims of the Immigration Crisis Than Kate Steinle /Traitorous ‘sanctuary’ cities are only the tip of the iceberg,” among much other coverage. While Kate Steinle’s murder has garnered much attention, in reality, such crimes sadly are all too commonplace, taking many innocent lives.
